October 2012 Castalia Wrap Up

Our first Castalia of the year began, where all readings should begin, with the creation of the world. First year prose writer, Morgayne O'Neill, read a piece that affirmed what dog-owners have long suspected: humankind was created as companions for pups.  Dave Thomas, another first year prose writer, regaled the crowd with an adventure on the high seas without the aid of the letters B, C, and D (written in the past tense, no less!) Thomas Grout, second year poet, transmitted his infectious poetry in such a way that we were grateful for the exposure. Rounding out the first half of the program, second year prose writer Fonda Fan took us on the hunt for the man who walks sideways. The second half of the reading featured alums James Arthur and Elissa Washuta. James, currently a Hodder Fellow at Princeton University, recited poems from his new book, Charms Against Lighting (Copper Canyon).  Elissa rounded out the evening reading from her memoir My Body is a Book of Rules, which will be published in 2014 by Red Hen Press. Seeing these alums making it out in the wide world is encouraging, and we were so lucky to have them read.

Next month will feature another full line up of rising literary stars. The November Castalia will include readings by Pimone Triplett, Rebecca Hoogs, Katie Hoffman, Darren Davis, Sarah Galvin, and Patrick Milan. The reading has been moved to NOVEMBER 13 due to Election Day. Looking forward to seeing you there!
